The first step in the design process is a consultation.  This will be held at the client’s home or design location.  Holding the first meeting on site helps the designer to better understand the needs and desires of the client.  It also allows the designer to get a general idea of what styles and elements might be useful in the space.  We request that, where appropriate, both the husband and wife be in attendance at the consultation.

At this initial consultation, a design program stating the scope of the design is developed together with the client.  Measurements and photographs of the site will be taken for the purpose of creating concept drawings that meet the client’s needs and desires.  A copy of the site plan or real property report may be requested in order to save time at this stage in the process.  If necessary, the designer will return to the site at a later date to confirm measurements or further examine existing plants and structures in order to make recommendations to the client.

After determining the client’s needs and desires, the designer heads back to the office to develop several concepts.  These are generally in the form of layout options for the client’s yard.  A second meeting will be held with the client to verify the direction of the project and to decide on a specific plan for the space.

This approved concept is then turned into the final design for the yard.  The design will be a high quality scaled drawing of the space and will include planting plans for any planting beds in the plan as well as a plant information booklet with notes about individual plants.  Detailed construction drawings may be requested for an additional fee.

A final appointment will be set up with the client to deliver the design and other materials.  At this point, the client may choose to implement the design on their own or to contract Outer Sanctuary Landscapes to handle the construction.

We offer project phasing to accommodate clients that  wish to spread the costs of the project over a longer period of time.  Once the final design is completed, we work with the client to prioritize the order of construction.
